Group phenomena reflect the fact that we evolved in groups to have like a different sort of perceptual and behavioral set of framework for those within our group as opposed to those without. The salient features of what constitutes a group appear to have no real evolutionary content to them whatsoever it's kind of just whatever people find psychologically salient in whatever environment they happen to find themselves in so we see it you know with everything from religious cults that promise that comments are concealing spaceships to dog show sub-readits or whatever.
