The Rise and Fall of the Gay Marriage Movement
The ground was softened. You had this id expressing itself in the form of act up and direct action on gay rights, Larry Kramer, all of that. And then 10 years later comes the, we just want what you want. But there was conflict in the gay community about that, though. There was plenty of gay activists who were like, we don't want marriage. Like it, there was a real distinct argument made there. It's more palatable than it might otherwise have been. If gay marriage had been a major issue in the 80s, I don't think it would have worked.
