The Life of Ellen Henrietta Swallow

Ellen Henrietta Swallow was born on December 3, 1842 in Dunstable, Massachusetts. Her parents were Peter and Fanny G. Swallow, both of whom had experience as schoolteachers. When she was little, a doctor told Ellen's parents that she should be encouraged to play outside for the sake of her health. An early 20th century biography described her as quote perilously close to being a tomboy.
