In the 19 fifties we had three main population groups in the united states from asia, japanese, chinese and philippinos. There weren't enough indian americans or south asian Americans to consider as seperat category. The initial inclination of the government was to put them in the white category. But by the time these classifications were being implemented in the late seventies, there were enoughindians out there for them to have several lobbyin groups a base in different parts of the country. N one of those lobbyin groups caught wind of the fact that indians were going to be classified as white, and they lobbied to have that the classification changed
