The Accident in the Canal
Two of the boys, Edward and Hugh, were canoeing in the canal with their dunes like clay medins. An accident occurred in which the canoe capsized and all four boys did drown. James Newberry and Dick Blunt, a Negro man, took out the children. They had been drowned a half hour when they were taken from the canal. It was here when my mom decided to sit down on a bench instead of going into the home of the plantation owner.
