In the A.K.A. period from 1964 to 1972, 10 of us, 10 young physicians, like myself, who went to the NIH had a profound impact on my generation of physician scientists. Four of the 10 trained with individuals who were themselves Nobel laureates or who would become Nobel laureates. In every case, our mentor's mentor was a Nobel laureate. It really speaks to the issue that there must be transferable elements in the process of doing high level science which can be passed by one generation to the next.
