Napoleon and the Topographical Bureau
When he wasn't annoying the ladies of Paris, Napoleon managed to keep himself busy. He wrote a doomed romance between an obvious Desiree stand-in and a character he clearly modeled on himself. The topographical bureau was responsible for providing maps to the armies. It functioned as a kind of proto-general staff for the French army.
