Friedrich Hayek's essay was a broadside against American Conservatives who wanted to basically be part of a European Conservative orientation rather than what was going on in America. "Conservatism proper is a legitimate, probably necessary, and certainly widespread attitude of opposition to drastic change," Hayek writes. For more than 60 years, liberals have insisted that the basilis of fascism lies semi-dormant in the bloodstream of the political right. No top-tier American conservative intellectual was a devotee of Nietzsche or a serious admirer of Heidegger.
