The Singularity of Artificial General Intelligence

If we create a true artificial general intelligence that is a superpower, has the ability to understand emotions and come up with novel ideas. It's very hard to know there's this idea of the singularity - I've heard of it but I don't understand it so maybe you could fill us in. If we crack AI and it goes off and it does the work of a million chemists and solves how to create cheap, light, affordable car batteries, vaccines, anything, the pace of change could accelerate even further from what we're seeing now.
