When Gaudy was born, this is in the 1850s. So the grid is famously its squares with the corners chamfered off. And it's hollow center originally. It's slightly compressed on the north-south axis. Slightly wider than they are. Almost, almost squares. But it also just took like an incredibly long time to be built out to any reasonable degree. People got run to developing things at very different times.
