The Limits of Reason

Hume was a skeptic along the same lines as, say, Michelle de Montin. One of Hume's great aims in inquiry was to produce a more modest understanding of human reason. He would do this in times through provocations, for example, his famous phrase, that reason is the slave to the passions. We don't live our lives as skeptics; we can only be skeptical if we are consistent and radical about it.
