The Importance of Being Taken Seriously
A meeting in 1897 between Sir Francis Bertie, who is the assistant undersecretary of the foreign office and acting German ambassador to Britain. Clark begins his story by pointing out that Bertie was known as the bull for his aggressive manner. Meanwhile, Eckertstein was a notorious anglophile who dressed in the manner of Edward VII and loved to be seen around London clubs.
