How LIGO Can Predict When a Black Hole Merger Will Take Place

LIGO can detect the inspiral and merger of stellar mass black holes, but only in the very final stages. Lisa is going to be really interesting because even though it only gets those last, you know, 10 or 100 orbits, that's enough lead time that you might actually know months in advance when a merger is going to occur. So people are really excited about the prospect that in the 2030s, after Lisa is supposed to launch, there will be systems that you can find with Lisa and then predict that you will be able to see them with next generation ground based detectors like LIGO five years or three years later.
