phosphorus was first used as a fertilizer in the 1700s. People have been trying to replenish nutrients lost with each crop since agriculture started 10,000 years ago. The English were pioneers in this and threw everything they could think of on crops: blood, fabric, bones and manure. And bones proved to be particularly effective.
