Is There an Arya Sangha?
In the Buddha's lifetime there were clearly many people who were not ordained, not members of an order but they were recognized as being in the Ariya Sangha. The view was and I think that you've got to be a little bit suspicious because of course it's in the interest of people like me or Yesha Bodhi to start sort of puffing ourselves up and saying we're the people you have should have true respect for. Well that's not the tradition certainly not in the Pali tradition no the refuge is for the AriyaSangha.
