I feel like everything about the movie leans on you to think of Ava as a woman. But my experience watching it and what I feel like the real way to watch it is to constantly in every scene don't fall for the trick that the movie is pulling. Like, you have to keep reminding yourself it's not a she, it's an it. And even Caleb's not being tricked. He knows it's going on, but he can't help it. This stuff is put on the table right at the start with yet still Caleb and yet still most viewers just get swept off our feet by the prettiness and the charm and the cleverness of the AI.
