The Life and Times of Ashoka the Great
Ashoka was the son of Bindusara and his wife Subhadrangi. The Greeks recognized him as Amitokratis, possibly a derivation of the Sanskrit Amitagata, meeting destroyer of foes. His rise to power is relatively unknown, but most accounts suggest that some kind of civil war had resulted in Ashoka killing a number of siblings.
