Tertullian: How does a Roman enter civil service? Well by a pagan oath and a pledge of allegiance to the emperor's lord. He says, if you wear a dirty cloak, the cloak of the magistrate, in other words, look at what you're trying to do historically. What makes you think that entering an office that has been soiled by others, you will remain clean?
