Jerry wexler helped re invent the stack sound. Steve cropper started taking his cue not just from the sound, but from watching al jackson's left hand going to the snare drum. This had in turn evolved into the whole group playing the back beat with a fractional delay - as if heu were listening to the echo of those beats rather than to the beat itself. It gave the performances just enough sense of looseness to make them exciting.
