The Age of Atonement

The incarnation became the central leading doctrine in the second half of the 19th century and a bit beyond pretty much up to World War I. George McDonald lives through that transition and actually is an agent of that transition. He grows up in a very age of atonement kind of model Christianity. In some of his books, he's quoting other figures in his life pretty much verbatim with their kind of rants which are kind of in his way of seeing it sort of squashing down the goodness of life. They're actually squashing down God's creation too.
