In July 2000, Paul Verhoeven turned down the chance to direct Basic Instinct 2. The only person who would be returning from the original ensemble was Sharon Stone. In March 2001 it looked like there was going to be a breakthrough when Benjamin Bratt met up with her for conversations about starring alongside her in the film. MGM was still just about on board at this stage but Stone hadn't approved the casting of Benjamin Bratt by the time of the required deadline that was set for the film and later reports suggested that she wasn't impressed and she vetoed his casting.
