Social Science Isn't Building on Commonly Accepted Beliefs
Social science doesn't spend a great deal of time thinking about the future. Many younger social scientists now say it his pretty career threatening to really work on speculative things. A generation out, you won't be rewarded in terms of the peer reviewd journals you publish in. You'll find it hard to raise money for this sort of work. But i think that kind of work can be done seriously, rigorously with the best available knowledge. It doesn't have to rest on a complete consensus about how human nature works or what makes societies tick. That's not the barrier. The barriers, the incentives within the system,. have essentially squeezed imagination right out to the margins.
