The Role of the State in Gentrification

The role of the state is crucial in gentrification, says Simon Tisdall. But he adds that it's also a matter of how states change over time and are subject to political contestation. In Great Britain, for example, social housing is owned by the state but treated at public infrastructure like schools or streets. If you move to Russia and talk about social housing, then it's very often with social housing. And this is embedded into the idea of Germany being a social market economy which is even enshrined in the German constitution.
