When his father's agricultural loan came due, the Shah's government offered no forgiveness or respite. So at age 13 Qasem and his cousin Ahmad had to leave home without their parents knowing in order to go work in the city of Kerman. It took eight months for the boys to save up enough money to make a meaningful dent in their father's debts.
