At the end of World War I, a lot of Americans looked around and they said we just lost all of these people and for what? And so as a result, Wilson had this grandiose idea that it would be the war to end all wars. But he was very sick in Europe, so he wasn't able to do the type of Paul taking with his allies that were essential. The idea that had a Messiah complex and also was exceedingly stubborn can be seen as maybe having helped to lead to his strokes.
