Hayward Shepherd, a Free Black Man
Hayward Shepherd worked as a porter for the B&O Railroad in Harper's Ferry. He was on duty the night of October 19th, 1859, the night of John Brown's raid. Either Brown himself or one of his men shot Shepherd, leaving him badly injured. In 1931, the local chapters of the UDC and the SCV erected a memorial to Shepherd.
