The History of Agriculture in Attica
Every city had its own agora, or marketplace, where merchants could sell their products. These were rarely fixed, so bargaining was a common practice. Even in the late 5th century BC, at least half the population of Athens was still engaged in agriculture. Because only citizens could own land, even the neediest farmers took pride in their way of life.
