Doris also was a pioneer for women's rights, but winning the right to use her maiden name wasn't one of her proudest achievements. Eddie admitted it was he who'd insisted on their joining the Lucy Stone League and that Doris had been reluctant about taking his last name. So years later, Doris actually would adopt her husband's last name as she apparently wanted to do all along. She never it was played as this big gesture of an independent woman making a strike for women’s rights,. But she actually really wanted to take Bernays's name and he wouldn't let her.
