A gene from wheat called oxalate oxidase was inserted into American chestnut embryos. It detoxifies the main weapon of the blight fungus, which secretes a strong organic acid that is toxic to trees. The enzyme breaks it down into carbon monoxide and hydrogen peroxide, which are not toxic to the tree. "I play with genetics and trees because I don't want to have my life depend on it," he says.
