The Dutch royal family built the first modern greenhouse, and then the British King's gardeners were planning them for real. The French installed a heated, indoor pineapple grow operation in Versailles. It is estimated that by the time a pineapple got to the table of some fancy pants mucky to muck, it spent the equivalent of nearly $9,000 to get it there.
