Art can be sold privately and anonymously to other buyers. Most art never even leaves the warehouse after the sale is completed, again for tax reasons. It's basically just a vehicle for transferring money in a lot of ways. I think within the last decade, there have been some significant legal steps taken that have made it more difficult launder money this way.
