The Importance of Old Papers
Less than 1% of the ancient material has survived for us to play with all these years later. Peter says we have over 6,000 letters in ancient Greek written on Papyrus. That might seem a lot but it's a tiny percentage of the letters we know must have been written. The most famous rubbish dump is in the city of Oxi Rancus, Egypt where nearly half a million fragments of discarded papyrus were found. Many of them now stored in Oxford.
