Plato and Diotoma, and the Lower Mystery of Love
i wanted to reflect particularly on the platonic tradition and also dante's sense of these things, because jonathan pago talked quite alott about dante in his response. And so i made the comment that whilst plato's symposium, where diotima speaks to socrates of what she calls the higher mysteries, is often described as the ladder of diotoma. But when you actually read the text,. you realize that there's no talk of going up out over at all, but while rather, it's a process that diotoma encourages in socrates to become more and more attentive to what he's loving.
