During World War II, families would have. these little banners that would have the amount of stars for how many sons you would have sent into conflict. So if you had two sons, you'd have two blue stars, and then if one was killed, then it would be a Blue Star and a Gold Star. If both were, and so it's a way of showing everyone in your community that you're all together because you all have these members of your family.
