CHAPTER

Isaiah Berlin's Criticism of Leo Tolstoy

Tolstoy wanted to be an empirical type, analyzing only observable phenomena and staying away from the mystical view. But he couldn't manage this, because the empirical view was so limited. To get the truth of things, he had to dig deeper, even if he didn't quite allow himself or the characters of his novels to express a unified view of reality. Through religion, in contemplation, meditation, or even nature, it's possible to see the flow of life despite our imaginings, desires, or aversions.
