The fall into poverty is kind of the ultimate American fear. And wouldn't it be nice to have a society where you knew like whatever happened, whatever happened, you'd be okay? You know, and that's the society that I want. Most Americans want a higher minimum wage. Most Americans think they're rich are paying their fair share taxes. So I think that there is a shift going on in the American public. We want a new story. We want to have a different conversation about inequality today.

The United States is one of the wealthiest nations on the planet, so why is it that our poverty rates surpass those of so many other countries? In this episode, sociologist Matthew Desmond shares a hard truth with Adam: we are constantly reinforcing wealth inequality in invisible ways.
