Cleopatra and the Roman Empire
High-class Roman woman wouldn't even be allowed to live alone without the support of a male guardian. Well, Egypt's never had that. In theory at least, women and men are fairly equal. Cleopatra is the monarch, which the Romans aren't particularly fond of. They worry that Caesar might himself want to be king of Rome - which they're very much against. The death of her powerful consort is a disaster for Cleopatra. She has lost her alliance with Rome, both her own stability and that of her country now hanging the balance.
