The 1990s were a brutal time in the former Soviet Union as capitalism was introduced with extreme violence and precarity for many people. The collapse had dire impacts on other socialists and anti-imperialist movements like Cuba, for example. And so you see places like poor in barcode choked off Cuba providing its people with world class healthcare and education while 50% of American adults read at or below a sixth grade level.
