The first time caste came out was when either I or my sister did something which didn't get the approval off to other girls in the group and one of those girls said you know in Marathi Bhartoli theme Bhartoli is a very rude way of referring to Brahmins. So then I kind of probed her and asked her what what all this caste is and later at school of course we learned about the four the Varnas system but she that was the time when she said caste is important in Hindu society.
