Babi Yaka's Role in the Hungry Forest

Babi Yaka is always the fulcrum of the story, right? Yeah. Essentially she's the part of the story on which the plot hinges or twists and she is going to turn the protagonist's destiny one way or the other. She has these definitively pagan roots in, you know, a mix of goddesses and stories. Going back to early Slavic goddesses, one particular goddess called Mokosh, who was a goddess of fertility and women's protection. In some versions of Babiaga's story, the house is on spindle heels, not on chicken legs, but on spindles. And so this is another kind of connection back to this Mokosh
