Angus: I was the only Singaporean present in Iowa City in 2011. It was a formative experience for me because I hadn't really had that kind of encounter with Chinese literature. So when Yuran said her work had never been translated into English, I just asked if I could do it. We sat in on a couple of translation workshops at the university. And then I translated her novel The Promised Bird, Shunya,. That was my first publication.
