A Digging Tool - A Mistake Made by Erasmus

The proverb refers to a digging tool with a word that goes all the way back to old english. The original greek version referred to some one who would call a fig a fig, and a trough a trough. But when erasmus translated the phrase, he mistook the word scafe, meaning a trough, for the greek word scatean, which meant a digging tool. Since he misinterpreted the word to mean a digging tool, he rendered the phrase in latin with the latin word lego, which also meant a spade or digging tool.
