This may be new to iOS 16, or I may simply have overlooked it before. Now that the percentage is available for display in the battery icon, I tried it and in fact, didn't like it is simply too small for me to see without my glasses. It's not a perfect solution by any means, but it is one that will probably connect you to many of the people with whom you already interact.
