Theodore dalrymple on the time machine by h g wells, i'm stephen blackwood. Wells was born in 18 66 on the lowest rung of the victorian lower middle class. By his late thirties he was wealthy enough to employ c f a voise and build him a large house. One of the lessons that wells himself never drew from his own life was that he was born into a society that, though very class conscious and indeed class written, was amazingly open.
