After the emancipation of the serfs in 18 61, lavaroff directed his vast knowledge of natural science, history, economics and psychology towards radical politics. He was exiled to the ural mountains but escaped and fled west, eventually finding his way to paris. Now more radical than ever, he joined the first international in 18 70, and was still in paris when many of his friends staged the insurrection that created the paris commune in 18 71. A thrilled supporter of the commune, lavrof decamped paris to go drum up support abroad. But of course, the whole thing fell apart in one very bloody week, and lavrof never came when he settled
