The Importance of Seeing Multiple Examples in Learning
The role of concrete versus abstract representations in thinking is controversial. A central principle of the highly successful teaching strategy, direct instruction, is to present students with examples that span the full range of possibilities for a concept. Siegfried Engelman argued that we shouldn't just teach concepts tied to particular subjects. Instead, he argued that presenting big ideas across their useful range might be better.
