The Lightness of Touch in Rachmaninov's Third Concerto
Rachmaninov's playing is very classicist in the sense that he plays with aristocratic discipline restrained structural oversight and so indeed many of these torrents of notes are played very lightly as ornamentation. He shows that a lot of them are meant to be very precise but small so with this work it sort of takes you along and attempts to trick the ear even with repeated listening or analytical listening. It's a great lesson that often one hears these pieces played with sort of degree of earnesty that then overloads the listening experience.
