API Gateway Provides Edge Load Balancing

gateway is meant to be not an implementation specific solution. My guess is that ingress will stick around because not everyone has these more complex details and ingress just hit V1 last year. We've seen a few other resources in Kubernetes over time get phased out as newer, more complimentary or advanced functionalities. I think it's probably going to take years because we're all just now getting ingress V1.25. But who knows version 1.25 could maybe something later where we're deprecating an older, more limited API.
