The Secret of the Carlton Club

I counted 13 not including the one we had come in from. Looking down some of them made me feel oddly queasy. Another was so dark that our torches didn't seem to reach more than a few feet inside. In the centre there was a date stone reading Robert Smirk 1835. Later I would look up a list of his works and discover he had indeed built the Carlton Club in that exact spot. It had been destroyed in the Second World War during the Blitz but it looked like the underground foundations or whatever this place was had not been damaged.
