The 14 Core Eye Statues of Athena
The Acropolis of Athens is one of the major sources of archaic statuary, since the Persians had overturned everything in their onslaught in 480 BC. Many examples continue to the end of the archaic period throughout Greece, but there is a specially striking late archaic series of 14 core eye statues from the Athenian Acropolis. By the mid-sixth century BC, other types of statues were being produced in the round. Around 560 BC, the Moscow Forerose, or calf bearer, was dedicated on the Acropolis at Athens.
